Before enrolling in CHIN courses, students must undergo a Chinese Language Placement Interview and gain approval by an instructor to determine the most suitable level for them. This interview helps identify which level best matches your course level requirements.

Basic Chinese


According to the Foreign Service Institute, Mandarin Chinese is one of the hardest languages for native English speakers to master. To master its complex grammar and syntactical structure will require over 2,200 hours of intensive study - that's six times longer than needed to reach fluency in Spanish or Italian!

This course is tailored for zero background beginners, emphasizing all four aspects of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students learn basic everyday Chinese by reading Chinese characters and constructing simple sentences using basic grammar rules. Classes meet twice every week with 10-minute language practice with the instructor each session.

Students take this opportunity to read some of the most acclaimed works of Classical Chinese from different genres, providing them with an introduction to China's cultural heritage through literary and philosophical texts that feature classical Chinese cultural connotations. Their reading comprehension will also benefit from careful examination of textual, lexical and contextual analysis.

Intermediate Chinese


Students with an established knowledge of Chinese who wish to reach a higher level of proficiency will find this course beneficial, as it focuses on reading authentic materials with rich cultural significance and cultivating skills necessary for semi-formal and formal presentations as well as academic essay and article writing. Prereq: EAST-UA 232 or equivalent, this class runs every semester for 4 points.

Chinese culture has long been defined by its dynamic expression of thought. This course will introduce students to this tradition through studying selected texts from pre-classical, classical, and late medieval periods as well as Yijing; we will also incorporate readings of its commentary readings.

An examination of major Chinese dialects from various perspectives, with particular attention paid to their syntax and semantic structures; other topics addressed may include multilingualism, language planning, code switching and vernacular literacy. Not open to students with previous credit for 6380 or 740.

This course explores China's oral and orally-connected performance traditions, from professional storytelling to folk singing, revealing how local languages reflect and shape the dynamics of regional cultures. Participants have an opportunity to participate fully by performing in Chinese, presenting and discussing various topics including autobiographical details as well as developing deeper insights into community, national, or international concerns.

Advanced Chinese


Oracle International Language Institute is a well-recognized company, located in Connaught Place and offering students and aspirants the chance to learn foreign languages such as English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. This program is intended to give students a firm understanding of Chinese culture and civilization as well as build communication skills that will assist in everyday situations. Students will also get an introduction to its history and literature before being offered opportunities for cultural activities like visiting museums and art galleries.

This course is open to both bilingual/heritage and non-heritage speakers of Mandarin who possess intermediate level abilities, and meets three one-hour sessions per week. Similar to the Intermediate sequence for non-heritage speakers, but focused more heavily on standard pronunciation, discourse level discussions of modern China topics, advanced reading and writing as well as reading-writing practice. Note that not open to students who already hold credits in 680. Prereq for this course includes CHIN 23100 or approval by instructor as part of global studies curriculum requirements or as GE lit and diversity global studies requirement of global studies course requirements for global studies course credit GE lit and diversity global studies course prerequisite.

Special Topics


An exploration of East Asian oral and orally-connected performance traditions. Coverage includes professional storytelling, epic tales, folksongs and dance. Lectures and discussions accompany demonstrations of selected examples.

Investigates the phonology, morphology and syntax of major Chinese dialects using a cross-dialectal and comparative approach. Topics addressed include multilingualism, language planning, code switching, vernacular literacy and dialect writing.

Chinese Studies courses designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student; subject matters will change every time this course is offered; prerequisite for enrollment: consent of instructor.
